Induction day

Welcome to Induction Day

This task will get you thinking about all of the core areas we cover in media studies.

Media language – The way images, text and colour convey meaning
Representation – The way someone is shown to an audience. How do we feel about them or perceive them?
Audience – The way an audience is constructed and the way a product appeals to them. A recognition that audiences are categorised in to groups and will consume different types of media.
Industry – All media organisations are businesses looking to make a profit. Consider the influence that ownership has on the end product produced.

You are going to design a front page for a newspaper. You will have to cover the main story of the day…
Conservative leadership race – Penny Mordaunt suffers first set back of campaign as MPs attack her stance on trans issues.Your news paper should approach this story from the following bias…
Left/Right Wing
Your front cover should include…
  • Masthead (consider if this is a tabloid or a broadsheet)
  • Price
  • Headline
  • Strapline
  • Main Image
  • Secondary Story
  • Puff
  • Advert
  • Feel free to add additional features on your front page based on your research
Note – Remember we are not looking for a finished/perfect product here. We are looking for your use of language, images, colour and the selection and combination of your media language choices to represent the story in way that would appeal to the target audience.

The story

Who is Penny Mordaunt?
Article

The audience

You must ensure your product clearly constructs a desried target audience by creating elements that appeal to them. Consider their political allgiences, their income and social class, assumed behaviours and more. Essentially who are they and what do they like. The tone of your pront page must appeal to them and you must be able to justify your decisions. Use some of the images below to help you.

EXISTING Examples

The mirror is typically considered a left wing paper where in contrast the times is considered right wing. This is supported by the graphic above. Look at these front pages and consider the key differences. Look at the way certain stand points are taken with regards to different stories. Can you also identify the difference between the broadsheet and the tabloid. Use these examples to help you with your own design.
